چکیده

A second order elliptic problem with highly discontinuous coefficients has been considered. The problem is discretized by two methods: 1) continuous finite element method (FEM) and 2) composite discretization given by a continuous FEM inside the substructures and a discontinuous Galerkin method (DG) across the boundaries of these substructures. The main goal of this paper is to design and analyze parallel algorithms for the resulting discretizations. These algorithms are additive Schwarz methods (ASMs) with special coarse spaces spanned by functions that are almost piecewise constant with respect to the substructures for the first discretization and by piecewise constant functions for the second discretization. It has been established that the condition number of the preconditioned systems does not depend on the jumps of the coefficients across the substructure boundaries and outside of a thin layer along the substructure boundaries. The algorithms are very well suited for parallel computations. 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification: 65F10; 65N20; 65N30.

BDDC methods for discontinuous Galerkin discretization of elliptic problems

A discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretization of Dirichlet problem for second-order elliptic equations with discontinuous coefficients in 2-D is considered. For this discretization, balancing domain decomposition with constraints (BDDC) algorithms are designed and analyzed as an additive Schwarz method (ASM). The coarse and local problems are defined using special partitions of unity and edge co...

Additive Schwarz Method for DG Discretization of Anisotropic Elliptic Problems

In the paper we consider a second order elliptic problem with discontinuous anisotropic coefficients defined on a polygonal region Ω . Our goal is to design and analyze an additive Schwarz method (ASM), see the book by Toselli and Widlund [4], for solving th...

Neumann-neumann Methods for a Dg Discretization of Elliptic Problems with Discontinuous Coefficients on Geometrically Nonconforming Substructures

A discontinuous Galerkin discretization for second order elliptic equations with discontinuous coefficients in 2-D is considered. The domain of interest Ω is assumed to be a union of polygonal substructures Ωi of size O(Hi). We allow this substructure decomposition to be geometrically nonconforming. Inside each substructure Ωi, a conforming finite element space associated to a triangulation Thi...

Additive Schwarz methods for the Crouzeix-Raviart mortar finite element for elliptic problems with discontinuous coefficients

In this paper, we propose two variants of the additive Schwarz method for the approximation of second order elliptic boundary value problems with discontinuous coefficients, on nonmatching grids using the lowest order Crouzeix-Raviart element for the discretization in each subdomain. The overall discretization is based on the mortar technique for coupling nonmatching grids. The convergence beha...

Multiplicative Average Schwarz for Elliptic Problems with Discontinuous Coefficients and Nonmatching Grids

We propose a multiplicative Schwarz preconditioner for solving systems of algebraic equations resulting from the mortar finite element discretization of second order elliptic problems with discontinuous coefficients. We consider coefficients may have large jumps across subregions, and the meshes to be nonmatching across the subregions. The preconditioner is based on exact solvers for its nonove...
